Cambodia Urges Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza, Calls for Full Implementation of UN Resolutions

PHNOM PENH, May 3, 2024 — Cambodia, through its Permanent Mission to the United Nations, has called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, stressing the urgent need to address the ongoing conflict that has resulted in a significant toll on civilian lives.

Speaking at the 75th Plenary meeting concerning the use of the veto under Item 63 at the UN in New York on May 1, Mao Tithiarun, Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative, Chargé d’affaires, of Cambodia to the United Nations, emphasized the critical need to implement the five resolutions related to the conflict. These include two resolutions adopted by the emergency special session of the General Assembly and three by the Security Council, with the latest being Resolution 2728 (2024).

Tithiarun highlighted the importance of expediting the implementation of these resolutions to save lives and establish a ceasefire, particularly to prevent the conflict from affecting the broader region. He underscored the necessity of addressing the root causes of the Palestine-Israel conflict to foster harmonious coexistence between the two nations.

Cambodia strongly supports the principle of a two-state solution and advocates for all parties involved to exercise restraint, engage in constructive dialogue, and settle their disputes through diplomatic and peaceful means to end the humanitarian crisis and achieve lasting peace.

Furthermore, Tithiarun pointed out that despite the non-adoption of a new United Nations Security Council resolution, Cambodia recognizes the importance of granting full membership to the State of Palestine. This step is seen as beneficial not only to the people of both nations but also as a contribution to peace and progress in the entire region.

The Cambodian mission also urged all parties to swiftly agree to a ceasefire to allow humanitarian access and the delivery of essential aid to those in need, and joined other nations in calling for the unconditional release of all hostages.
